Google acknowledges that factory resets are not commonly performed by most users, but emphasizes their commitment to user experience.
Google cautions Pixel 6 users against immediate factory resets

According to Google, Pixel 6 users should avoid performing a factory reset shortly after installing the latest system update, as it may result in the device becoming unusable or “bricked.” This issue affects the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Pixel 6a models.

The problem was first highlighted in community forums in late June, where numerous users reported that their Pixel devices failed to boot up after a factory reset, leaving them stuck in recovery mode. Google says the issue stems from the latest software update. The phone can become inoperable when users attempt a factory reset too soon after updating.

“To avoid this issue, we recommend leaving your device powered on and idle for 15 minutes after it has rebooted following a system update,” Google states. This precaution allows the device to complete all necessary background processes before undergoing a factory reset. Alternatively, Google suggests performing a factory reset before installing the latest update.

For those already affected, Google acknowledges the problem and assures that a fix is in the works. “Our teams are actively working to fix this issue. We appreciate your patience and support,” reads a message from the Google Pixel Support Team.

The issue has generated considerable frustration among Pixel users, as evidenced by the surge of forum complaints. One user, Anton Kamski, expressed dissatisfaction: “This was my last Pixel smartphone. I’m tired of eternal problems with fast discharge and communication problems.” Another user, ItsRaejon, criticized Google’s handling of the situation, stating, “All they want out of you is information on the phone’s warranty. No type of actual technical support or information regarding this issue or anything like it.”

Google has yet to provide a concrete timeline for the resolution. However, the company said that the issue has been identified and is being addressed. For now, the best course of action for Pixel 6, 6 Pro, and 6a users is to avoid performing a factory reset immediately after updating their devices.
